Carlo Completes First St Columba’s Hospice Placement Experience

Edinburgh College student Carlo Bozza has become the first to complete a placement with St Columba’s Hospice, following the establishment of a new partnership between the College’s Hairdressing, Beauty Therapy and Complementary Therapies team and the charity.

Thirty-year-old Carlo, who progressed on to the College’s HNC Sports Therapy course, first became involved with the Hospice while studying a Wellness Therapy course, part of the College’s Hairdressing, Beauty and Complemetary Therapies Department.

The team introduced Carlo to St Columba’s Complementary Therapies lead Lisa Spalding, who was looking to recruit  students who would be able to provide complementary therapies to carers, following an increased demand on the Complementary Therapy Service

Carlo spent 28 hours working with those who’s loved ones receive specialist palliative care at the Hospice, supporting carers in what can be a very difficult time.

Carlo practiced massage and reflexology treatments on carers during his afternoon sessions with the Hospice, giving him an experience of working in a different environment to that which he was previously used to.

Carlo said: “I’ve really enjoyed my placement experience at St Columba’s, working alongside Lisa and meeting some great people. I will now continue work at the Hospice, as a volunteer, to continue supporting patient carers while working on developing my skills as a masseuse.”

Lisa Spalding, CTC at St Columbus Hospice said “It’s been great having Carlo as part of the team supporting our carers.  Feedback from our first complementary therapy practice placement has been overwhelmingly positive and we look forward to offering more opportunities to Edinburgh College students in the future.”

Curriculum manager for Hairdressing, Beauty and Complementary Therapies Frances Bain said: “Well done to Carlo on this great achievement. He’s been a credit to the College in completing this placement and we’re very proud of him.

“It’s clear from feedback from his lecturers, and from staff at St Columba’s, that Carlo has a great career ahead of him due to his professionalism, awareness of environment and his talent as a practitioner.”
