Capital College supports Anturas in revolutionising Railway Safety Verification

Background

Anturas, a leader in delivering Safety Verification Schemes under the Railways and Other Guided Transport Systems (ROGS) Regulations 2006, has been involved in significant projects like the Edinburgh Trams York Place to Newhaven extension and the Glasgow Subway Modernisation. Recognising the inefficiencies in the current process for determining the need for Safety Verification, Anturas partnered with Edinburgh College to develop a web-based application aimed at streamlining compliance with ROGS regulations.

Challenges in safety verification

The current process for assessing light rail projects against ROGS is both costly and resource-intensive, often requiring specialised personnel to determine if Safety Verification is necessary. This process is typically reserved for large-scale projects, which leaves smaller projects at risk of insufficient safety assurance. The lack of a consistent approach across all projects can lead to gaps in safety and compliance, highlighting the need for a more efficient and accessible solution.

Innovative collaboration

To address these challenges, Anturas and Edinburgh College embarked on a collaborative project to develop a new digital tool. This tool, funded by a Standard Innovation Voucher from Interface, aims to provide a consistent and streamlined approach to ROGS compliance for all railway undertakings. The project began by repurposing an existing tool, which was then transformed into a dynamic, user-friendly digital interface through iterative design and development.

Outcomes and benefits

The collaboration resulted in a comprehensive front-end system that exceeds the original expectations. The new tool offers several key benefits:

  • Comprehensive system design: It sets a new standard for intuitive functionality while meeting all compliance needs.
  • Enhanced user interface: The user-friendly design significantly improves the user experience.
  • Robust data security: The tool incorporates advanced security measures to protect sensitive information.
  • Streamlined compliance: It reduces wasteful practices and improves sustainability.
  • Operational efficiency: The innovative workflow enhances efficiency in navigating ROGS requirements.

Future prospects

While this phase marks a significant milestone, Anturas is committed to continuing its partnership with Edinburgh College. Future development efforts will focus on enhancing database and back-end components to realise a fully functional digital tool.

Conclusion

The collaboration between Anturas and Edinburgh College exemplifies the power of industry-academia partnerships in driving innovation. For Anturas, the project not only delivers a ground-breaking tool but also reinforces the value of teamwork in achieving transformative outcomes.
