Green Skills Training

Green Skills training at Edinburgh College is delivered in our Renewables and Energy Efficiency Training Centre at our Granton Campus. Our Green Skills courses ensure current and future industry professionals gain up-to-date skills and qualifications sought by employers.

These courses are also accepted by Competent Person’s Schemes (CPS) and Microgeneration Certification Schemes (MCS) registration bodies.

Heat Pump Systems NOS Mapped Air Source Ground Source    

Course Overview      

This course is designed to give installers the skills and knowledge required to correctly install heat pumps. This course has been designed to meet the requirements of the National Occupational Standards and industry working groups.

Entry Requirements 

Trainees should have a minimum SVQ Level 3 qualification in plumbing or conventional heating engineering, or a demonstrable number of years of relevant experience, plus Water Byelaws.

What you will learn 

This course is split into two areas:

  • Heat Pump Technology + Ground Source + Air Source
  • Recognised as a demonstration of competence for the Microgeneration Certification Scheme (MCS)

The manual covers:

  • Heat pumps in context
  • How a Heat pump works - principles and components 
  • Insulation, heat losses and the effect of heating system design 
  • Domestic hot water, buffer tanks and solar coils 
  • Ground heat exchangers 
  • Health and Safety 
  • Heat pump installation 
  • Maintenance and fault-finding

Assessment Information

Candidates will be expected to complete a combination of practical and theory examinations.

Solar Thermal Systems (NOS Mapped) 

Course Overview

The Solar Hot Water Thermal Systems are now fully mapped against the National Occupational Standards. Such a course is a requirement of the minimum technical competency (MTC) document for solar installers and the certificate is recognised by all bodies offering routes to the Microgeneration Certification Scheme (MCS) as evidence of suitable training. A 3-day course will enable candidates to select the most appropriate solar system for a building based on the client’s needs and to install and maintain any of the common systems in the UK safely and efficiently. This course and assessment are not regulated by OFQUAL. The certificate meets the requirements for MCS operators.

Entry Requirements

Trainees should have a minimum NVQ level 2/3 qualification in plumbing or conventional heating engineering or demonstrable evidence of at least 3 years of relevant experience, an Unvented Hot Water Storage Systems Certificate, and Water Byelaws.

  • Preparing to install a solar water heating system
  • Fitting solar collectors
  • Plumbing layout and design of solar water heating systems

Awareness of Environmental Technologies

Course Overview

Against a background of constantly rising fuel bills, this course is designed to provide a background to renewable energy heating and energy technologies for anyone who may find it of interest, such as householders, housing associations, teachers, local building control officers, housing developers or installers wanting to know more before committing themselves to a full course.

Entry Requirements

This course is open to all applicants.

This training course consists of 9 modules:

  • Module 1 – Introduction to renewable energy
  • Module 2 – Solar Thermal Heating
  • Module 3 – Biomass Heating Systems
  • Module 4 – Heat Pumps
  • Module 5 – Wind power
  • Module 6 – Photovoltaics
  • Module 7 – Micro-hydro power
  • Module 8a – Rainwater Harvesting
  • Module 8b – Greywater reuse
  • Module 9 – micro–Combined Heat & Power

Assessment Information

Participants are tested on their knowledge at the end of the course via a theory-based assessment.
