Course overview
Routes into Employment is a refreshed and forward-looking 36-week programme designed to support learners as they move from school into the world of work or further vocational study. Delivered at SCQF Level 4, the course is structured into two 18-week phases that blend classroom learning with meaningful, college-organised work placements.
The programme focuses on developing the core capabilities employers value most: confidence, communication, practical skills, and the meta-skills needed to adapt and thrive in real workplace environments. Learners build these skills through a combination of core learning, guided support, and a wide range of optional units that allow personalisation based on interests and career goals.
What you will learn
- Course Support: Helps students settle into college life, understand expectations, and stay on track with their learning. This includes support with organisation, attendance, and building confidence in a new environment.
- Guidance and Tutorial: Provides regular one-to-one and group guidance sessions. Students reflect on progress, set goals, discuss challenges, and plan their next steps toward employment or further training.
- Meta skills: Develops the higher-level skills needed to thrive in modern workplaces—such as problem solving, communication, teamwork, adaptability, and self-management. These skills underpin all learning across the programme.
Placement information
- All students on the Routes into Employment programme will be allowed to complete a work placement as part of their learning. Placements may take place in the first semester, the second semester, or across both, depending on each student’s readiness, confidence, and developing skill set.
- This flexible approach ensures that every learner can access meaningful workplace experience at the point in their progress that best supports their progress. Staff will work closely with students to identify suitable opportunities, prepare them for placement, and help them reflect on what they have learned.
How the course is assessed
- Assessment is continuous and practical, with students completing tasks, activities, and workplace evidence throughout the course.
