Course overview

Routes to Communities is a dynamic, hands-on course designed to help you connect with your local community, understand the value of community participation, and prepare for volunteering or work placements. Through a blend of classroom learning and real-world experience, you’ll explore how communities function, discover opportunities to get involved, and develop the skills needed to thrive in a supportive, inclusive environment.

What you will learn

  • Activity and Participation Opportunities in the Community: Discover local services, groups, and activities. Learn how to identify and evaluate opportunities that align with your interests and goals.
  • Volunteering / Work Placement Preparation: Get ready for the world of work and volunteering. Build your CV, practice interview skills, and understand workplace expectations.
  • Working with Communities: Volunteering: Explore the role of volunteers in community settings. Reflect on your contributions and understand how volunteering can shape your future.

Placement information

  • Students will have the opportunity to source and complete a placement within the community or voluntary sector.

How the course is assessed

  • The Routes to Communities course is assessed entirely through a portfolio of evidence - there are no formal exams. Students compile work throughout the course that demonstrates their learning, skills development, and placement experience. This may include reflective journals, project work, presentations, and feedback from tutors or placement supervisors.

  • 1 day per week (Wednesday) 

Entry requirements

  • There are no formal entry requirements for the Routes to Communities course.
  • All that's needed is a genuine interest in working within the community or voluntary sector.
  • The course is designed to be inclusive and accessible, welcoming learners from all backgrounds who are eager to make a difference.

English Proficiency Requirements

IELTS 4.0

Progression and Articulation Routes

  • Move on to further study at SCQF Level 4 or above
  • Start volunteering with local charities or support services
