College Graduation Day is extra special for Shelley

An Edinburgh College student had double the reason to celebrate when she got engaged during her graduation celebrations earlier this month.

Shelley Stockman, 37, from Tranent, was proposed to by her boyfriend Paul Miller, 36, following the College’s class of 2025 graduation on Thursday, 6 November.

As Shelley gathered with friends and family to celebrate achieving a PDA in Childhood Practice, outside of the McEwan Hall, Paul got down on one knee during a surprise proposal in front of the iconic Edinburgh building - surrounded by classmates, cheering onlookers, and college staff. The special moment was captured on video and has been shared across social media.

Shelley said: “I was completely stunned when I saw Paul down on one knee - I was actually shaking with excitement. It was an incredible surprise that made the day even more unforgettable. From beginning to end, it was a truly special day, and we can’t wait to continue celebrating with our friends and family.”

The couple, who met through friends, are now planning an engagement party to celebrate the occasion.

Edinburgh College Principal Audrey Cumberford said: “What a wonderful way to make an already memorable day even more special. Graduation is the highlight of our college year, and it’s always an honour to see the proud faces of our graduates’ friends and families as they celebrate their achievements.

“I’m over the moon for Shelley and Paul, and on behalf of the entire College, I offer them our warmest congratulations on their engagement.”

Shelley, who works as a Senior Early Years Practitioner, now plans to use her qualification to develop her career.

Over 600 students from subjects across each of Edinburgh College’s faculties: Health, Wellbeing and Social Science; Tourism, Hospitality and Business; Engineering and Construction; and Creative Industries, as well as Professional Learning and Development, were also honoured across the day.
