Meet the Edinburgh College students giving up their time to help others by volunteering

To mark Volunteers Week 2026, we’re shining the spotlight on some of our amazing students who give up their time to help improve the lives and experiences of others.

Romana Docherty – 20 – HND Contemporary Art Practice

“I was really inspired to volunteer after speaking to the team at ECSA. They told me all about the real difference I could make by volunteering, and how much my voice matters in creating change. I wound up founding the Edinburgh College Knit & Crochet Society, because I felt that in comparison to a university we don’t have as many ‘extras’, for people to socialise and have fun.

“We’ve managed to bridge that gap and create a sense of community with the students that come along, and it’s just a great time. For me personally, volunteering has helped me massively. As an autistic person, it’s given me a major confidence boost, I find it so much easier to speak to new people since I started running events, and I’ve developed a lot of skills that will help me professionally, like communication, organisation and design.

“I would 100% encourage other students to get involved with volunteering, it’s so rewarding!”

John Docherty – 20 – NC Games Development

“I decided to take up volunteering not long after the start of term, when I realised there was a few of my classmates struggling with maths revision. I started up a Granton-based Maths Group Study Club, so we could all come together and help each other. I’m really pleased that it went down a treat, and we had students coming every single week, which helped us all improve our grades.

“Eventually, I wound up volunteering to run the Edinburgh College Game Society. I organised lots of events throughout the academic year, and managed to secure sponsorships from some big names like Bayne’s, El Sabor and even over £300 from IsThereAnyDeal. I just wanted to offer something to other students, to make sure they were enjoying their time at College as much as possible, and give them a chance to become part of a community.

“The whole experience has been so fulfilling, and I’ve really gained confidence, made friends and have learned the stories of so many people that rely on game soc, which has helped me realise the power of games to bring communities together. I’ve also built up a host of skills, like sponsorship communication, marketing, and financing, while making useful contacts for my future. If you’re considering volunteering, I’d definitely say go for it, you don’t know where it might lead you.”

Megan – 18 – UAL Acting & Performance

“I’ve done a few different bits of volunteering, with youth drama group Lyra in Craigmillar, at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival, and at an Oi Musica! Concert. I wanted to volunteer at these places because they’re all involved with the creative arts and that’s what I’m interested in, and I always remember my high school music and drama teacher telling me that saying yes to opportunities helps you grow your confidence and make connections.

“Volunteering has helped me in so many ways, it’s made me feel more confident and outgoing, and has made me realise I am capable of doing things even if I initially feel a bit anxious or scared. If any students have the chance, I’d 100% recommend doing it. You will gain something from it, and have so much fun doing so.”
