Recognising Excellence Award Winners - Lisa Strachan

At the start of the summer, the College was proud to host the Recognising Excellence Awards at the Granton Campus. Over a hundred students, alongside their friends and families, gathered for the wonderful night which represented a culmination of all the hard work they’d put in across the academic year.

Following on from that brilliant event, we’re featuring interviews with some of the winners. Next up in the series is Lisa Strachan. The 46-year-old from Edinburgh received the Chair’s Award for Outstanding Achievement, in recognition of her dedication to studying SWAP Access to Arts, Humanities, Social Sciences & Primary Teaching.

We caught up with Lisa to find out what winning the award meant to her, and what she’s made of her time at Edinburgh College:

Hi there Lisa! How did it feel to pick up the Chair’s Award?

“I was genuinely surprised! I feel really grateful and honoured to be recognised this way.”

How did you start your journey at Edinburgh College?

“I chose Edinburgh College for a variety of reasons, but a big one was that it was close to home. I have young children still at primary school, so having that proximity just made life so much easier.”

What were you doing before you came to study here?

“After many years working with the public, I decided to take some time out to stay at home with my kids. During that time I did a few different online training courses, including ones with the Scottish Drug Forum and the Open University.”

Can you think of any particular highlights from your time at the College?

“The best thing has been rediscovering my confidence, and realising I’m more capable than I give myself credit for. I’ve loved all the subjects I’ve covered, and being surrounded by supportive lecturers and peers has made a huge difference. I’ve attended guest lectures at Napier University, won this amazing award, and received five offers for universities.”

Is there anything you’d like to say to those lecturers who helped you on your way?

“I’d like to say a heartfelt thank you to all of my lecturers who have supported and encouraged me throughout my journey. Your kindness, patience and belief you have in all of your students truly changes lives. You have helped me regain confidence, rediscover a part of myself, and to believe in a future I once thought was out of reach. I will always be incredibly grateful for all the support and advice you have given me.”

Finally, what are your plans for the future?

“I’m hoping to continue my education at university, and to keep developing academically and personally. I want to eventually build a career in a role that will make a positive difference to people’s lives.”
