College lecturer Becky Galbraith speaks at Podiatric Sports Medicine Conference
Edinburgh College lecturer Becky Galbraith delivered a session at the 12th Annual Podiatric Sports Medicine Conference, hosted by the Royal College of Physician and Surgeons in Glasgow’s Faculty of Podiatric Medicine in Glasgow today (31 January).
Becky’s session, titled "Injury Prevention Strategies in the Scottish Women’s Premier League" explored key methods to enhance player safety and performance in women’s football.
Session highlights
Becky’s session emphasised the growing importance of injury prevention in women’s football. As the women’s game in Scotland gains prominence, tailored strategies to address the unique needs of female athletes are essential. Becky covered key topics including:
- Common injuries in female footballers – a discussion on ACL tears, concussions, ankle sprains, and issues related to Relative Energy Deficiency in Sport (RED-S).
- Innovative prevention techniques: Showcasing strength training, neuromuscular conditioning, and proper technique education and highlighting the use of wearable technology and analytics for real-time injury tracking.
- Gender-specific research –highlighting the need for research tailored to female athletes’ physiological and psychological characteristics to create safer playing environments.
Becky’s impact on women’s football
Having played professional football for more than a decade, Becky has since turned her attention to giving back to the game and supporting the next generation of women’s players. She pioneered the first of its kind Achieving Excellence in Women’s Football course which launched in August 2023, exemplifying her dedication to advancing the sport. For session 2025/26, this course has been expanded to focus on Achieving Excellence in Women’s Sport and is available as part of the College’s Schools College Partnership offering for school pupils participating in sport at club level.
Combining theory and practice, the course covers anatomy, physiology, nutrition, and personal wellbeing, equipping young players at school age with tools to succeed.
During session 2025/26 Becky and the College’s Sport and Fitness department are also launching a new Wellbeing and Performance in Women’s Football course which builds on the previous offering to provide a short full-time course, before allowing students to progress on to an Access to HNC/D Fitness and Soft Tissue Therapy programme.
