Edinburgh College and Edinburgh Napier University provide new opportunities for Built Environment students
Edinburgh College and Edinburgh Napier University are working together to provide exciting new opportunities for students seeking a career in the Built Environment sector.
The new collaboration will provide insights and enhanced pathways for students who are considering higher education as a route to a career in Civil Engineering and Architectural Technology disciplines.
The collaboration began with Edinburgh Napier colleagues visiting the College’s Granton Campus, where Kenny Leitch (Associate Professor at Edinburgh Napier University’s School of Computing, Engineering and the Built Environment) and Lauren Paton (Employer Liaison and Recruitment Manager at Edinburgh Napier), engaged with Civil Engineering and Architectural Technology students. They provided detailed information on articulation routes, helping students explore their options for progressing to university-level qualifications.
Building on this, students from the HNC Civil Engineering course recently visited Edinburgh Napier’s Merchiston Campus for a hands-on experience in materials testing. Led by university lecturers Willie Laing and Sia Vachlas, the session aligned perfectly with the Materials and Testing unit of the students’ current course at the College. Those in attendance participated in testing procedures, gaining practical experience that reinforced their classroom learning. Additionally, concrete cubes made on the day will be further tested in an upcoming visit, ensuring continued engagement with real-world applications.
The visit proved invaluable for students, particularly those considering university as their next step. For some, it solidified their decision to pursue further study, while others found themselves re-evaluating their future career paths. Andrew Livingstone also shared his expertise, providing insights into the dynamic and evolving world of Civil Engineering.
Looking ahead, the College is confident that this partnership with Edinburgh Napier University will continue to grow – offering greater benefits to students and strengthening educational links within the Built Environment sector.
It has been fantastic to start this collaboration with Edinburgh Napier University to showcase the options for further study to our students and give them greater insight into working life in our sector. Our thanks go to our colleagues at Edinburgh Napier for this fantastic experience to date, and we look forward to continuing to work together for the benefit of our students, and in turn, the sector as a whole.Neil Gordon, Curriculum Team Manager, at Edinburgh College
Edinburgh Napier University has a longstanding relationship with Edinburgh College, based on a shared ethos of providing opportunity. As well as being of benefit to both institutions, we hope this collaboration helps learners who wish to continue their education to degree level. Given the critical skills shortage in civil engineering, architectural technology and surveying, we need to ensure those entering employment have the necessary skills which will allow them to progress their career. We look forward to continuing to work with Edinburgh College to offer a seamless pathway for those who are working towards a degree in their chosen field of study.Kenny Leitch, Associate Professor at Edinburgh Napier University’s School of Computing, Engineering and the Built Environment
