Scottish Apprenticeship Week 2025 – James Montgomery

As part of Scottish Apprenticeship Week, we’re putting the spotlight on some of our incredible apprentices.

We recently caught up with nineteen-year-old James Montgomery, who studies at our Granton Campus, to find out more about his apprenticeship, his time at College, and his plans for the future:

What apprenticeship are you doing?

The apprenticeship I’m doing is in slating and tiling and I work for Greyfriars Roofing.

How are you finding your apprenticeship?

I’m finding it quite good, it’s got its challenges and stuff, but you’re here to learn. You’re always learning on the job and it’s good because you get paid to do it.

How are you finding balancing work with your studies at College?

I enjoy it because there’s some things I would learn at my work that I wouldn’t learn at college and it’s just learning different ways of doing things and dealing with stuff. It’s been good!

What would you say to someone who is thinking about doing an apprenticeship?

I would recommend doing it, you get to meet loads of new people and learn loads of new stuff, and it’s a really good experience.

What would you like to do once you’ve completed your apprenticeship?

If all goes right, I would like to go to Australia for a couple of years and work over there. I would work away for a while and then come back, set up my own business, and just try and be as successful as I can be.
