Course overview

Studying Advanced Higher English will build on skills learned in Higher English, especially the ability to understand, discuss and critically analyse complex texts such as literary classics, and to produce writing that uses sophisticated language to explore subjects in great depth and detail.

You will produce a portfolio of writing and a dissertation on the literature of your choice, with guidance and support from your lecturer, which will develop skills in research, planning and independent study. The course will cover a wide range of texts including novels, short stories, non-fiction, poetry and drama.

  • Advanced communication skills in reading, writing, talking and listening
  • Understanding, critical analysis and evaluation of complex and sophisticated literary texts
  • The production of complex and sophisticated texts in a range of contexts
  • Knowledge and understanding of complex and sophisticated language

Number of days per week

  • 2 days (Sighthill Campus), Tuesday and Thursday

Entry requirements

  • A or B in Higher English or equivalent, such as AS Level English.
