Course overview

Biology Higher is a part-time course that allows candidates to develop a deeper understanding of the underlying themes of biology. The scale of topics ranges from molecular through to whole organism and beyond. You will develop an understanding of DNA and how the structure of the genome leads to the basis of evolution and biodiversity.

Genomics is studied as one of the major scientific advances in recent times. Metabolic pathways and their control are considered along with the conditions in which organisms survive and their means of coping. The interdependence and complex interactions between organisms are explored and sustainable food production, with the fundamental process of photosynthesis at its core, is investigated. These topics will prepare you for further education, training or employment in areas associated with life sciences.

Higher qualifications, accredited by the SQA, are typically studied at high school and college. These qualifications act as pathways to further study including university entry. Edinburgh College offers a selection of subjects at a Higher and Advanced Higher level on a part-time basis. You may choose to study up to two subjects. These courses are challenging and require the ability to study independently.
