Course overview

Future Skills: Engineering and Automotive is designed to provide introductory knowledge in the major engineering disciplines of Automotive, Mechanical, Systems and Electrical Engineering as well as introduce renewable energy and its relevance to engineering disciplines. It will equip students with knowledge & skills to enable them to choose a specific route for further study and prepare students with the employability skills required for a career in the engineering sector.

The Future Skills programme includes a building project that will encompass all the knowledge and skills learnt throughout.

Students will leave with an appreciation of Numeracy, Communication, ICT and meta-skills and are provided with an articulation route into a specific study in Engineering, Electrical Engineering or Automotive.

Note: This is a college-devised SCQF level 4 equivalent. 

This is a full-time course taught at Edinburgh College Midlothian Campus.

  • Practical workshop skills for Engineering, Electrical Engineering and Automotive Engineering
  • Underpinning theoretical knowledge in Electrical Principles, Mechanical Engineering, Materials, Electronics, Automotive Engineering Principles and Electric Vehicle Technology
  • Employability and Project skills
  • Maths, Numeracy, Communication and ICT

How the course is assessed

  • Progress is assessed throughout the course as tasks are completed

Number of days per week

  • 3 days week

Entry requirements

  • National 4 Maths and English would be beneficial
  • A keen interest in Engineering
  • A positive learner reference from a previous course or college is desirable

You will be invited to participate in an informal discussion about the course at the recruitment stage. This may be as part of a group or on an individual basis and will initiate a conversation about the course content and your personal statement.

Progression and Articulation Routes

  • Progression to an Engineering specialism in Mechanical, Electrical or Automotive would be supported.
