Capital College and Cadpeople shortlisted for Learning Technologies Award

Edinburgh College and Cadpeople have been shortlisted for a major national award in recognition of their ground-breaking Virtual Reality Dementia Experience programme.

The College and learning technology specialists Cadpeople have been named a finalist in the Best Use of Simulations or Virtual Environments for Learning at the 2023 Learning Technologies Awards following the introduction of the VR Dementia Experience at the College’s Sighthill Campus Digital Care Hub.

The unique learning experience allows students to see the world through the eyes of someone living with dementia, enabling them to experience hallucinations, patterns and lines coming alive around them, and memory loss – some of the typical effects of the syndrome – through their headset.

By immersing students in a person with dementia’s reality, the VR Dementia experience gives students a unique insight into the practical care that is needed for people living with dementia, whilst also providing them with a more engaging learning experience that will set them up for a successful career in care.

The Learning Technologies Awards is a prestigious event, attracting submissions from around the globe – with the College and Cadpeople named finalists alongside companies including Land Rover, Deloitte and HSBC.

The winners of the Learning Technologies Awards will be announced at a ceremony held in London on Wednesday 15 November.

We are delighted to have been shortlisted alongside our partners Cadpeople for this national award. We are very proud of the work that our team and Cadpeople have produced and the immersive VR experience and capabilities we now have at our disposal to better equip those working with Dementia patients. My thanks go to our partners at Cadpeople and our amazing team here at the College.
Jon Buglass, Vice Principal
We are very excited to have been nominated for this award. The partnership with Edinburgh College on this project has been of great benefit to us in the understanding of Dementia care. The team at Cadpeople are so proud to have been involved. Furthermore, we have been overwhelmed by the feedback from students, families and carers using the modules. It’s making a real difference and we hope to do more together.
