Course overview

This course is for pupils in their final two years of high school. It is intended to be studied alongside your high school subjects. 

The Foundation Apprenticeship in Engineering is your first step towards an exciting career in engineering. The course will develop your skills and knowledge of the engineering industry. You will learn both the theoretical and practical aspects of engineering. This will give you an insight into the engineering workplace and allow you to gain hands-on experience. 

You will attend College for approximately three afternoons a week. The two-year course will award you a National Certificate in Engineering (SVQF Level 6) and the Foundation Apprenticeship Certificate includes additional PEO qualifications. (Performing Engineering Operations).

  • Working Efficiently and Effectively in Engineering (FR0T04)
  • Foundation Apprenticeship Certification (HE6E04)
  • Using and Interpreting Engineering Data and Documentation (HE9C04)
  • Complying with Statutory Regulations and Organisational Safety Requirements (HE9D04)

Placement information

  • You will gain industry-related work experience either within a realistic working environment 

How the course is assessed

  • You will be assessed at the end of each outcome 

Number of days per week

  • Tuesday, Thursday and Friday afternoons
  • Time: 1.30 PM - 4.30 PM

Entry requirements

  • Grade A-C in National 5 Mathematics and Physics, or a science-related subject 
  • Applicants should be studying Higher Mathematics in S5 
  • Applicants must have an interest in a career in the Engineering Sector 

Information on Tests / Auditions / Interview Requirements

  • Conditional offers will be made to candidates who hope to achieve the National 5 entry requirements in S4, plan to study Higher Maths in S5 and submit a good personal statement. Offers will be reviewed when exam results are received in August.
