Course overview

Introduction to Electrical and Electronic Engineering is a full-time course taught at Edinburgh College’s Midlothian campus. The course is designed for those interested in pursuing a career in the electrical engineering industry. During the course, you will gain a broad understanding of electrical engineering including an introduction to Electrical Principles, Electrical Installation Fundamentals, Mathematics, IT and Electrical Hand Skills. 

The units you will study are designed to support your progression to further studies in this area. This course can also lead to our Electrical Engineering NC Higher, which can lead to our Electrical Engineering HNC. This course can also prepare you for an apprenticeship in installation or maintenance. 

Note: This is a college-devised course and does not lead to a qualification. 

You will be taught by staff with extensive experience in the electrical engineering industry. You will also have access to Edinburgh College workshops, where you will use up-to-date technology and equipment. The course is based on both the workshop and classroom, ensuring you get practical and technical skills. 

Edinburgh College works closely with many businesses and these connections can help you find part-time work to develop your practical and employability skills. The College will actively encourage and support you to seek relevant work experience.

  • You will be contiunally assessed throughout each unit

  • 3 days per week

Entry requirements

  • Mathematics or Physics at National 4 (please note we do not accept Application of Maths)
  • A keen interest in Electrical engineering is desirable
  • A positive learner reference is desirable
