Course overview
This course is for S5 and S6 pupils who are still at school.
You will develop a knowledge and understanding of Scots Law and its application. The course focuses on providing an understanding of how systems of law and regulation work and how the law applies to everyday lives.
The course provides learners with the opportunity to develop Meta skills for legal-related occupations and further study.
Provides learners with the foundations to go on to study HNC Legal Services or Police Studies
What you will learn
Crime in Society
This unit enables you to explain what constitutes a crime in Scotland and the main principles involved in the prosecution of crime and to explore the nature of crime and its effects on the individual and the community. It encourages you to reflect on crime and become more aware of its implications.
Scots Law: An Introduction
This unit provides you with a broad knowledge and understanding of Scots law including the sources of law and how new laws are made. You will learn about the differences between criminal law and civil law and about the structure, jurisdiction and appeals of both the civil and the criminal courts. You will develop knowledge and understanding of the system of criminal prosecution in Scotland, the tribunal system, and about the roles, appointments and responsibilities of the legal profession.

How the course is assessed
Each subject will have different evidence requirements and approaches to assessment.
Some examples are provided below on the methods of assessments:
- Open Book
- Exam – Close book controlled
- Project-based assessments

- 2 afternoons per week - Tuesday and Thursday 1:30 pm - 4 pm
Entry requirements
Three National 5 qualifications at Grade C or above in relevant* subjects
or
- Any relevant National Qualifications Group Award at SCQF level 5 (including Comms/Numeracy)
You must complete a strong personal statement
