The National Progression Award (NPA) in Theory and Approaches to Youth Work at SCQF Level 6 provides a foundation in youth work, preparing learners for further study or careers in Youth Work, Community Work, or related sectors. The course consists of two mandatory units: "Working with Communities: Youth Work" (6 SCQF credits) and "Youth Work: Engaging with Young People" (8 SCQF credits), totalling 14 SCQF credits at level 6.
It aims to enhance learning quality, improve career opportunities, and develop effective work skills, including core and transferable skills. Specifically, it helps learners understand youth work development and purpose, issues affecting young people, engagement approaches, current methods and practices, and essential communication and interpersonal skills.

This course equips you with the foundational knowledge and skills needed for further study or a career in Youth Work, Community Work, or related sectors.
How the course is assessed
- Written reports to demonstrate understanding, investigative projects presented in different formats
- Reflective diaries documenting personal learning experiences

- Multiple-choice questions test knowledge on particular subjects.
These diverse assessment methods ensure a comprehensive evaluation of theoretical knowledge and practical skills.

- Tuesdays and Thurdays 1.30 PM to 4.00 PM
Entry requirements
- Applicants must have achieved National 5 English/SCQF level 5 Communication.
- Experience of working with young people would be advantageous but not essential.
